Joy in the Darkness
Are you afraid of the dark? Are you dwelling in darkness?
God is light. As long as you find Him, even if you are surrounded by darkness and chaos, trust in Him. Draw faith and strength from Him, and heavenly peace and joy will surely accompany you.
Back in our childhood, when kids were picky eaters and refused to eat, parents would say, "We’ll send you to Africa for a few days without food—then you’ll know how to eat properly!" If you’re feeling hopeless, sad, or stuck in life now… take a trip to Huiming School for the Blind, and you’ll realize just how fortunate you truly are.
Huiming School for the Blind was established in Taipei in 1958 and relocated in 1961 to its current location in Daya, Taichung. It is a private educational institution dedicated to serving the visually impaired (source: Wikipedia). Simply put, it’s a school built for the blind. In September 2024, I first heard about the school through a summer mission trip report shared by Brother Victor. Honestly, it stirred a ripple in my heart—though not a great wave. At the time, I only had a superficial understanding: that there was such a place and such a group of disadvantaged individuals who needed help.
Embarking on the Journey to Taiwan
The Sacred Music Team's 10-day trip to Taiwan was filled with uncertainties and unknowns—from the initial draft of the plan to the final decision to go. Plans often can’t keep up with changes, but no change can ever surpass the power of a single word from God!
"Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed His word by the signs that accompanied it. Amen." — Mark 16:20
I said to myself: If the Sacred Music Team has the Lord working with us, what do we have to fear? Before I began arranging any part of the itinerary, I prayed and asked God to personally be the commander of the Sacred Music Team—to lead all 13 members to every place He wants us to go. I asked Him to open the doors that align with His will, and to remove the ones that do not.
Visiting Huiming School for the Blind
At the final stage of planning, I laid out the entire itinerary in front of me, going through each stop one by one to confirm everything again and again. To my surprise, I noticed that Huiming had been added and removed from the schedule multiple times… and now, it had finally secured a place on the list. I knew deep in my heart—this was a place God wanted us to go! With faith, strength, and peace from the Lord, we set out, fully equipped and ready!
But He said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.”
— Luke 4:43
Huiming was the second stop for the Sacred Music Team’s ministry in Taiwan. Before arriving, I had simply thought of it as a typical church performance. But as we entered the campus and followed the guided tour, step by step we walked into a world that was dark yet bright, seemingly simple yet incredibly complex. Everywhere we looked, we saw meticulous discipline and well-organized details.
I was stunned into silence.
But… aren’t they blind?
How do they manage all this…?
For our performance at Huiming, the Sacred Music Team had prepared three songs. The enthusiastic response from the audience caught us completely off guard—it was nothing like the somber and cold atmosphere I had imagined. To our surprise, someone even shouted, “Encore!” So we sang an additional song—mission accomplished!
Voices That Break Through the Darkness
But in fact, the real musical feast was just about to begin…
The blind students walked onto the stage one by one, each placing a hand on the shoulder of the person in front. They began to sing for us to hear—so focused, so earnest. From their facial expressions and the way their bodies moved to the rhythm, you could feel their confidence, shyness, and excitement. Not a trace of shame over their physical limitations—none at all!
They sang hymns, played the piano, violin, and flute—completely at one with the music.
In darkness, they had memorized every note by heart.
They touched their instruments with emotion, felt the songs with their spirit, and expressed gratitude through pure joy.
They radiated positive energy.
Each one of them was a living testimony of God’s love and grace.
God loves every person He has created—He has not forsaken a single precious soul!
To me, this wasn’t just a musical experience.
It was a moment of grace that shattered and rebuilt my understanding of giving and receiving.
Being at Huiming today, we were the true recipients of an immeasurable blessing.
Maestro Lin used to tell us to memorize the music and not look at the sheet—
we weren’t too happy about that!
…But now, shouldn’t we start learning the songs by heart, with sincerity?
Maestro Lin used to tell us to smile when we sing—
and we were reluctant to do it!
…But now, shouldn’t we sing with joyful, smiling faces?
As we left Huiming, I silently offered a blessing in my heart for all the teachers and students there...
May the Lord's cords of lovingkindness guide each of the blind students,
so that you may always walk in the true light of God.
May He reveal to you that you are wonderfully and purposefully made,
deeply loved and fully accepted by Him!I thank God for giving the teachers, counselors, and volunteers the gifts of teaching,
for placing in your hearts a burden and a calling,
and for giving you a love for God and for others,
so that you are willing to use this role to share His love. The fruit you bear will last—it is remembered by God!
This prayer of thanksgiving and blessing is offered in the holy name of Jesus Christ,
Amen.
Where the Light Dwells, the Heart Longs to Follow
“The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?”
— Psalm 27:1
Are you afraid of the dark?
Do you feel like you’re surrounded by darkness?
God is light.
As long as you find Him—even in the midst of chaos and deep darkness—if you trust in Him and draw strength and faith from Him, you will experience heavenly peace and joy.
He will walk with you through every hardship and trial. Truly!
If today you feel hopeless, sorrowful, or overwhelmed by life—
Take a trip to Huiming School for the Blind, and you’ll see just how blessed you really are.
