The Priceless Pearl in His Palm
On March 23, 2025, during a 70th anniversary musical celebration at Taichung Model Village Church, the Los Angeles Sacred Music Team gathered. Pastor Lung-Pao Cheng shared from Luke 15:8–10, where Jesus tells the parable of the “Lost Coin.”
A woman has ten silver coins and loses one. She lights a lamp, sweeps the house, and searches carefully until she finds it. And when she does, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, “Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin!” What a vivid message, beautifully woven with our musical offerings—it left a lasting impression on everyone present.
“Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Does she not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
—Luke 15:8–10
A coin is a material object—it has no life. It isn’t like a person, who is living and carries inherent worth. Life is where true value lies.
So where does the value of silver lie? It has no mobility of its own. Its value depends on the authority of the nation that minted it. It is derivative, determined by whose hand holds it and how it’s used.
Does a lost coin still have value?
When no longer in possession—lost in some dusty corner—it becomes pale, forgotten, useless. Why would the woman go to such great lengths—lighting a lamp, sweeping the entire house, searching every corner under the table and bed—just to find it?
As the pastor described the scene so vividly, I suddenly realized: the woman in the parable searches inside the house—not outside.
The house represents God’s house; the woman represents the Holy Spirit; the lamp is His light.
The Holy Spirit, with unwavering love, searches for the lost within the house of God. But how can someone still be lost while already in the house? At that moment, His light quietly shone into my heart—like a flashlight illuminating the darkness within—exposing my selfishness, pride, self-righteousness, hardness, weakness, and deep-seated insecurity.
I was like that lost silver coin, hiding in a dusty corner, covered in dirt and shame.
But the Holy Spirit paid no mind to my brokenness or self-pity. He never gave up—He pursued me until He found me!
When He found me, He swept me out from under the bed, shook the dust off me, wiped away the grime stuck in my cracks. He cradled me close to His heart, engraved me on His palm.
He saw me as precious and priceless—and invited others to celebrate with Him!
What holy, tender love!
He found me!
In His eyes, I have value!
He loves me—with an everlasting love!
Though I once felt worthless, I am His beloved, unique treasure.
The warmth of the Holy Spirit began to well up from within me.
Jesus used something so earthly to illustrate the value of heaven—how marvelous!
Not long ago, I caught a cold and lost my voice entirely. Our voice is one of the instruments of praise, and losing it was deeply painful.
I worried—if I could no longer sing, would I still have value?
But Jesus’ parable of the lost coin reminded me:
My value comes from God. Even if I lose my voice, my soul can still commune with Him.
Through worship in spirit and in truth, my heart is set free, my spirit soars!
I am the pearl in His palm.
I am His treasure.
Hallelujah—what incomparable love!
